PYE Trainer, Andrew Nalani, Has an Urgent Message for Bill Gates

On September 26th, PYE Trainer and New York University Ph.D. Candidate, Andrew Nalani, spoke to a packed audience that included Bill and Melinda Gates, and other global education influencers. The event was Goalkeepers 2018, where speakers from around the world met in New York City to talk about learning, innovation, and to get inspired. Goalkeepers 2018 took place to coincide with the meeting of global leaders at the UN General Assembly.

In a powerful, seven-minute talk, Andrew shared his remarkable story of growing up in Uganda and how creative empowerment changed his life. His message for Bill Gates and the world? Learning can — and needs to be — an empowering experience for everyone. We need to reimagine education, and here’s how we do it.

Andrew is an inspiration to us all, having worked in Northern Uganda to support the re-integration of ex-child soldiers from the Lord’s Resistance Army at a Creative Empowerment Camp. Since then, he has trained to lead Creative Facilitation training for practitioners, and PYE camps for teens in the US. In 2015, Andrew launched the African Youth Leadership Experience (AYLE) for teen leaders in East Africa, based on PYE’s Creative Empowerment model. He has accomplished all of this while earning his Masters in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and starting his Ph.D. at NYU.

Andrew’s Ph.D. thesis will break new ground in our understanding of transformative educational experiences for young people, with a focus on PYE’s Creative Empowerment Model.
